Students with diplomas in Acupuncture, Developmental Services Worker, Social Services Worker Diplomas have highly relevant backgrounds for the WDP graduate diploma. Taking cross-listed 4th year WDP courses during their undergraduate degree will create a seamless transition for the college to university to post-graduate diploma bridge. Additionally, the WDP elective courses are expected to prove popular with current BAHSc students, not only the bridging students. Many BAHSc students take the degree to allow them to move into administrative roles within their organizations, and the WDP courses align well with these roles. It will also provide career ready skills, and enhance the experience for all BAHSc students by increasing diversity. The creation of the proposed pathway program is in line with the Ontario Techmandate, as stated in the university act, “to facilitate student transition between college-level and university-level programs“. It is also in line with the provincial government’s priorities in developing bridge and pathway programs. This collaboration would not only enhance the profile of the WDP program and attract higher quality applicants with a more relevant background, but also benefits BAHSc by expanding the applicant pool.
This change will require the faculty to commit to offering the WDP electives each year (except 2021-22, which will only require the first two electives to be offered) so that students have access to the required WDP courses. Currently we have access to sessional instructors with relevant industry experience, who have experience teaching in the WDP, so new hires are not required at this time. These instructors have also developed the undergraduate sections of the course to run fully online as a part of a recent ONCAT grant.
The new formal pathways may increase overall BAHSc enrolments. There is capacity in current core course sections to take a number of new students, should the new pathway prove popular. The new WDP electives will be popular with a broad range of BAHSc students and will enhance elective capacity.
Program will be available to Georgian College applicants, as of the Fall 2021 entry. Students enrolled in the BAHSc as of Fall 2021 will have the option to take the WDP courses.
Much of the developmental work for this pathway was done in consultation with our partners on an ONCAT grant from Georgian college Diploma in Acupuncture, SSW and DSW. At Ontario Tech the Associate Deans of the Undergraduate and Graduate programs, the BAHSc program committee, and CIQE have all been consulted.
