    • Adding MCSC 6003G - Modelling and Computational Science Professional Skills (new non-credit course) to core degree requirements for MSc program (both course-based and thesis option)

This new non-credit course will introduce the students to – or further train them in - skills like public speaking, intellectual property management, grant writing and so forth. It makes reference to the
Graduate Professional Skills program, that was not in place when the program was originally designed but is now a well-run and versatile program offered by SGPS.

Include a brief summary of the changes included in this proposal.
  • Is a new course associated with this proposal?*

(C) Detailed proposal information
  • STEP 4 - Complete Section C
  • Enhanced academic opportunities*

Adding a Professional Skills course will enhance the position of our graduates on the job market. Requiring them to choose from two different categories will help ensure that their professional skills are not too narrowly focussed.

Description of the ways in which the proposed change will enhance the academic opportunities for students.
  • Financial/ resource implications*

None. The students will either take workshops organised by SGPS or through alternative channels, like professional organisations. No teaching credit will be requested for the GPD or research supervisors.

Provide an analysis of the financial and resourcing implications.
  • Enrolment implications*

Professional skills are in high demand on the job market. Adding the Professional Skills course, and tying it to workshops regularly offered by SGPS will help with recruitment. Although other considerations (research topic, funding level, et cetera) are usually given more weight, this may lead to an uptick in admissions to the MSc program.

Provide an analysis of the enrolment implications.
  • Transition plan*

As soon as this change is approved, the GPD will take stock of the MSc students currently enrolled. They will submit a list of relevant activities and the GPD, together with the research supervisor(s), will
determine if they meet the course requirements, and instruct the student to engage in further activities if not. Exceptions will be made for those students who are within 6 months of graduating and have insufficient activities related to Professional Skills. These students will be given a PASS. At the time of writing, there are only 2 students this exception might have to be applied to if the calendar change comes into effect by September 2022.

Transition Plan: [Semester (e.g. Fall 2020) for the implementation of the proposed changes; include a plan for all current students in the program, by year level. If this change impacts students that are not new and/or 1st year students as of the start date, then a transition plan is required].
  • Additional supporting information, if applicable
Describe any additional information needed to support the proposal.
  • Calendar start date*
Choose when the change should appear in the Academic Calendar.
  • Registration start date*
Specify the first active term (e.g. Fall 2021).
(D) Impact and consultation
  • STEP 5 - Complete Section D
  • We have consulted with all impacted areas*

  • Consultation*

The course is only intended for MCSC students so this change will not affect any other programs. All faculty members affiliated with MCSC have been consulted and agreed with the change, as did the Steering Committee. Continuation and use of the Graduate Professional Skills program confirmed with the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
