    This course explores the ways in which Indigenous peoples represent themselves, through media and technology such as computer and video games. The unique approaches taken by Indigenous creatives in various digital media provide powerful counter-narratives to the stereotypic tropes that have been promoted through western film, television, news sources, and the like. Centering Indigenous voices and agency in these media creates space for stories of surviving and thriving, despite the impacts of colonization. Different mediums are explored to develop a foundational understanding of the dynamic and sometimes controversial nature of Indigenous self-representation.

    Forms of instruction and assessment include Indigenous pedagogies; experiential learning; guest speaker engagements; small-group discussion; land-based learning trips; digital/visual graphics design assignments with a self-reflective component; and written communication. The use of talking circle format to facilitate discussion of Indigenous story, worldviews, etc., will require a flexible classroom space.
    Sample Assignments
    1. Comparative analysis paper: Using a single event (e.g. Wet’suet’en solidarity blockades, Mi’kmaq lobster fishing disputes), the student will select a series of media that cover the event by using a minimum of 3 non-Indigenous and 3 Indigenous media sources. These can be found online, in news or periodical journals. Using these sources, the student will analyze the lenses through which Indigenous actions are portrayed. The student will tie this analysis into course readings (minimum 3) to support their points.
    2. VR or video storyboard. Using the storyboard as a storytelling medium, the student will create a series of panels (the student’s artist capabilities are not be judged!) using sketches or clipart (or other) to outline a digital media proposal that explores some aspect of decolonizing to a maximum of 10 panels. A short summary and contextualization is to accompany the panels (1-3 pages). The student is encouraged to be creative in creating a compelling storyline. The panels will be shared and evaluated by the student’s peers, as well as the professor, for a final grade.
    3. Group presentation on a critical issue in Indigenous representations in digital and visual media. The presentation will be 20 minutes in length. Each group member is responsible for submitting a short annotated bibliography of the 3-5 sources they have researched to contribute to the group’s presentation and will receive an individual mark. The group will receive a collective mark for the presentation.
    4. Discussion participation. Each student is responsible for contributing to the overall class discussions. Weekly discussion questions based on the class readings will be submitted.
    5. Final project. This may be done individually or in small groups. The final project is to explore key themes the student(s) has found particularly relevant to their own learning. The form this takes is up to the student(s). The expectation is for the project to examine the impacts of Indigenous acts of survivance, political and social resistance and resurgence.

  • What was the advice you received from the IEAC? And, how has it been included in your proposal?

    Advice to date was mainly regarding corrections to terminologies, which have been integrated.

    The IEAC curriculum consultation sub-committee (Jill Thompson, Nancy Hamer Strahl, Kaitlyn Watson and Rachel Ariss) reviews new course and program proposals between full IEAC meetings, provides feedback to proponents, and reports to the IEAC. The sub-committee has reviewed the Indigenous Studies Minor Proposal, are satisfied with it and strongly support the new program as proposed. The IEAC may add further comment after its next meeting on December 7, 2021.

    1. This course will require the hiring of a full-time Indigenous faculty member
    2. Honoraria for Elders, Knowledge Carriers, guest speakers
    3. Stipend for travel, meals, and cultural resources to allow the instructor to build respectful relationships with local communities and community members (such as, Knowledge Carriers and Elders). The faculty member(s) need to have the resources to build and maintain relationships with local community members. Always asking a Knowledge Carrier or Elder to come into the class, but to not reciprocate the relationship in meaningful ways is not considered respectful.
    4. Will require compensation for the development of online delivery media and modules.
