  • Brief background on existing program*

The Kinesiology program at Ontario Tech was born out of the Health Sciences program over a decade ago, with the first class graduating in 2010. Early iterations of the program were based on existing infrastructure and faculty expertise, thus creating a Kinesiology program with a strong focus on science, health, rehabilitation, and exercise therapy. This prepared students for a small number of career options, rather than the breadth that the field of Kinesiology has to offer. Furthermore, there were few elective options for students interested in other fields within Kinesiology, and little flexibility to take courses outside of faculty or in other program areas within Health Sciences.
As the number of faculty members in the program area has grown, and the intake of students has grown, the Kinesiology team has made several minor changes to ensure delivery of a high-quality program. The program content is informed by our accrediting body, the Canadian Council of University Physical Education and Kinesiology Administrators (CCUPEKA), and to a small degree, the College of Kinesiology of Ontario.

  • Rationale for the new pathway*

Ontario Tech’s Kinesiology program already has pathways from college programs in Fitness and Health Promotion, Occupational Therapy Assistant, and Physical Therapy Assistant. These are two- year college diploma programs, which then require three years for students to complete their degree in Kinesiology.

Massage Therapy is a three-year Advanced Program where students take demanding courses highly relevant to Kinesiology such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pathophysiology of the cardiorespiratory and neuromusculoskeletal systems, Health and Wellness and Therapeutic Exercise. Having a Kinesiology degree in addition to a massage therapy Diploma will provide a stronger learning experience for students, giving them advanced critical thinking. Students who choose to register with both the College of Massage Therapy and the College of Kinesiology in Ontario will be able to provide more services to clients. This is also important as the physical demands of being a massage therapist often mean that they are looking to diversify their career options, as many cannot practice full time for more than ten years.

How will this enhance the parent program and/or opportunities for students and graduates?
  • Fit with the mission, mandate, strategic plans and program offerings*

One of Ontario Tech’s priorities is “Learning re-imagined”. This priority seeks to provide flexible and dynamic learning opportunities, a range of credentials and experiential learning opportunities and learner-centred options.

Fit with the mission, mandate, strategic plans of the University, and the broader array of program offerings (evidence of fit, particularly areas of teaching and research strengths and complementary areas of study).
  • Resource requirements
  • Faculty members

No additional faculty members are required

  • Physical resource requirements

Numbers of students accepted would be limited to ensure that we can work within existing Kinesiology laboratory space and timetabling.
