  • Summary of proposed changes*

To create a pathway for graduates of the Kinesiology program to the Durham College (DC) three-year Massage Therapy Diploma. Ontario Tech is allowing Kinesiology students take to take four required courses in the DC Massage Therapy program as electives in year 3 or 4 on a letter of permission from the Ontario Tech Registrar’s office. These courses have a strong practical component, and Ontario Tech students need these courses in order to be able to shorten the time to complete the Massage Therapy Diploma to 2 years instead of 3 years. Two of the courses have 84 course hours, two have 56 hours each and the other two have 42 course hours each, so the time involved exceeds the time for an average university course, and develops breadth of learning in skills and content relevant to kinesiology. The course outlines for the six courses are included for reference.

Include a brief point by point summary of the changes included in this proposal.

  • Introduction
  • Brief background on existing program*

The Kinesiology program at Ontario Tech was born out of the Health Sciences program over a decade ago, with the first class graduating in 2010. Early iterations of the program were based on existing infrastructure and faculty expertise, thus creating a Kinesiology program with a strong focus on science, health, rehabilitation, and exercise therapy. This prepared students for a small number of career options, rather than the breadth that the field of Kinesiology has to offer. Furthermore, there were few elective options for students interested in other fields within Kinesiology, and little flexibility to take courses outside of faculty or in other program areas within Health Sciences.
As the number of faculty members in the program area has grown, and the intake of students has grown, the Kinesiology team has made several minor changes to ensure delivery of a high-quality program. The program content is informed by our accrediting body, the Canadian Council of University Physical Education and Kinesiology Administrators (CCUPEKA), and to a small degree, the College of Kinesiology of Ontario.

  • Rationale for the modification*

The majority of Kinesiology students enter the program with the goal of becoming a registered health practitioner following completion of their Bachelor of Kinesiology. Physiotherapy and Chiropractic in particular are the two main areas of interest. Unfortunately, these post-graduate programs are highly competitive and not all students are able to gain admission, despite exemplary grades and experience. While some students choose to become “Registered Kinesiologists”, others want a more
“hands on” profession. Massage Therapy offers an excellent alternative for these students. It is “hands on” like chiropractic and physiotherapy, and applies much of the knowledge gained in their Kinesiology degree to an area of applied study. Normally the Durham College Massage Therapy Diploma takes three years. Even though Kinesiology students are given recognition for past courses, the program cannot be shortened because there are four practical first year courses that students need as pre-requisites in year 2 and 3 of the Massage Therapy Diploma. Durham college is going to permit a limited number of Ontario Tech students in the Kin to RMT pathway to take these courses in  year 3 or 4 of their Kinesiology degree and Ontario Tech is going to accept the six Durham College courses for elective credit as part of the pathway.

How will this change or enhance the program and/or opportunities for students and graduates?
  • Fit with broader array of program offerings*

One of Ontario Tech’s priorities is “Learning re-imagined”. This priority seeks to provide flexible and
dynamic learning opportunities, a range of credentials and experiential learning opportunities and
    learner-centred options.

Description of how the proposed modifications fit into the broader array of program offerings, particularly those areas of teaching and research strengths, and complementary areas of study.
  • Resource requirements
  • Faculty members*

    No additional faculty are required

List of core faculty associated with the program, including appointment status, home unit, areas of teaching and research interests, and any new faculty requirements and gaps they would be expected to fill.
  • Additional academic and non-academic human resources*

This will require Academic Advising to issue the call for applications each year in March to year 2 and 3 students. It will require the Manager of Advising and the Kinesiology Director to review the applications. It will require the registrar’s office at Ontario Tech to recognize the 6 DC courses, and the Durham College Registrar to have a way to admit the students to the DC courses.

Details of any administrative requirements, including support staff, adjunct and part-time faculty, supervision of experiential learning opportunities, and any other additional academic and non-academic human resources.
  • Physical resource requirements*

No additional physical resources are required.

Details of any physical resource requirements, including library holdings, information technology support and student services, special equipment, and space requirements (classrooms, laboratory, graduate student work/study space, other).
  • Business plan
  • Statement of funding requirements*

    n/a

A summary statement of the funding required to support the modification, including projected enrolments, start-up and continuing costs, if applicable.
  • Statement of resource/funding availability*

    n/a

Statements attesting to the adequacy of resources to support the modification from Deans who may have faculty members involved in or are contributing resources, the Registrar or the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Chief Librarian and the Provost.
  • Transition plan
  • Transition plan*

Kinesiology students who are in the second year of the current kinesiology program will be able to apply for this option in the fall of 2022. That is because this is the first group in the new kinesiology program map. From 2023 onwards, students in both the 2nd and 3rd year of the kinesiology program will be able to apply for this option.

Semester (e.g. Fall 2020) for the implementation of the proposed changes; include a plan for all current students in the program, by year level. If this change impacts students that are not new and/or first-year students as of the start date, then a transition plan is required.
  • Other
  • Additional supporting information, if applicable
Describe any additional information needed to support the proposal.
(D) Impact and consultation
  • STEP 5 - Complete Section D
  • We have consulted with all impacted areas*
By selecting 'yes', you agree that you have consulted with all affected areas prior to beginning this proposal. Select 'N/A' only if the change(s) do not involve students, staff and faculty from other programs or courses.
  • Process of consultation*

Extensive consultation has occurred throughout the development of this new option for students. We have had several meetings with Durham College faculty and registrarial staff as well as meetings with CIQE and the Ontario Tech Office of the Registrar (admissions, records/registration, fees). Discussions have included curriculum and logistics.

Describe process of consultation with other units if the change(s) involve(s) students, staff, and/or faculty from other programs or courses.
