This course is inspired by recent moves in interdisciplinary social sciences to “rethink economics 101” from an interdisciplinary perspective. The goal is to help students interested in business, development, politics, or policy to undertake their studies with a better understanding of how businesses and economies operate in the “real world,” which is often more complicated than the way in which academic theories present economic activity and systems. This course will explore critical, diverse, and scientifically supported tools to understand how humans and businesses behave economically and how this behavior can produce, or reduce, inequities, environmental damage, and human flourishing. Students will develop understandings of human economic behavior that are essential to a range of activities – from marketing, to innovation, to sustainability and justice. They will learn how businesses and consumers are impacted, and impact, the policy environment that constrains their actions while making economic activities possible in the first place. The course content will be particularly useful to those who are interested in working in business or in engaging in critical development and policy studies.
Contact hours describe the amount of time students spend engaging directly with the course and are listed in the Academic Calendar.Note: If the following non-required fields do not apply, please leave them blank (i.e., do not add 'n/a' as this content will import to the calendar).

No additional financial implications. This would be offered as a service course that can be taken as Liberal Arts elective for students in other faculties. This could imply significant enrolment, but this would likely be offset by drops in students choosing other courses (SOCI 1000 / PSYC 1000) as their Liberal Arts elective choice.
