(C) Detailed proposal information
  • STEP 4 - Complete Section C
  • Introduction
  • Brief background on existing program*

The current Kinesiology program was revised in 2019. At the time specializations were removed. For reasons outlined in the rationale, this has proved problematic, and this Major Program Modification seeks to establish two specializations based on courses already existing within the kinesiology program.

  • Rationale for the modification*

The Kinesiology program used to have two specializations. Five years ago the program was revised and the specializations were removed. We have now had a full four years of students go through the revised program and we have heard from numerous students and they would prefer to have specializations to help them know which courses to take based on their future directions. An additional consideration is that students who challenge the examination to become a registered kinesiologist (R.Kin) in the province of Ontario really need to take courses in the Exercise Science and Rehabilitation Specialization to obtain the appropriate background. Re-establishing specializations will enable the Kinesiology program to advise students interested in becoming a registered kinesiologist to complete this specialization, and it will allow the program to track the success rates of students from the Exercise Science specialization vs students who do not complete the specialization who take the R. Kin. examination. A final and important consideration is that the Office of the Registrar has indicated that high school students look for specific specializations on the OUAC website and when they are not explicitly listed, it impacts a student’s decision to apply to the Ontario Tech Kinesiology program.

How will this change or enhance the program and/or opportunities for students and graduates?
  • Fit with the mission, mandate, strategic plans of the University, and the broader array of program offerings.*

The program fits nicely into the integrated academic-research plan of the university. The creation of specializations gives students greater opportunity to identify and complete courses most related to their future career and educational goals. The majority of the included electives also include experiential learning opportunities.

Description of how the proposed modifications fit into the broader array of program offerings, particularly those areas of teaching and research strengths, and complementary areas of study.
  • Resource requirements
  • Faculty members*

    n/

List of core faculty associated with the program, including appointment status, home unit, areas of teaching and research interests, and any new faculty requirements and gaps they would be expected to fill.
  • Additional academic and non-academic human resources*

    n/a

Details of any administrative requirements, including support staff, adjunct and part-time faculty, supervision of experiential learning opportunities, and any other additional academic and non-academic human resources.
  • Physical resource requirements*

    n/a

Details of any physical resource requirements, including library holdings, information technology support and student services, special equipment, and space requirements (classrooms, laboratory, graduate student work/study space, other).
  • Business plan
  • Statement of funding requirements*

    n/a

A summary statement of the funding required to support the modification, including projected enrolments, start-up and continuing costs, if applicable.
  • Statement of resource/funding availability*

    n/a

Statements attesting to the adequacy of resources to support the modification from Deans who may have faculty members involved in or are contributing resources, the Registrar or the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Chief Librarian and the Provost.
  • Transition plan
  • Transition plan*

All current and future students will have the option to take these specializations as of September 2024. As the specialization courses are upper year electives, it does not impact student progression as the majority of required courses are completed in years one and two.

Semester (e.g. Fall 2020) for the implementation of the proposed changes; include a plan for all current students in the program, by year level. If this change impacts students that are not new and/or first-year students as of the start date, then a transition plan is required.

there is one elective course, KINE 3482 – Physical Activity & Indigenous Peoples in Canada, which already exists and went through IEAC consultation when it was created. This course is one of the possible electives in the Health Promotion and Public Health Specialization. The IEAC has been notified of the new specialization which includes Kine 3482 as a possible elective.

  • Did the IEAC ask you to return the proposal to them for review?
If Yes, have they completed their review?
