  • Introduction
  • Brief background on existing program*

The Kinesiology program at Ontario Tech was born out of the Health Sciences program over a decade ago, with the first class graduating in 2010. The program has a strong focus on science, health, rehabilitation, and exercise which creates an excellent foundation for post-graduate study in health-related fields including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic and medicine in addition to careers in sport and exercise science. This provides an ideal foundation for the new pathway.

As the number of faculty members in the program area has grown, and the intake of students has grown, the Kinesiology team has made several changes to ensure delivery of a high-quality program. The current Kinesiology program was revised in 2019. The program content is informed by our accrediting body, the Canadian Council of University Physical Education and Kinesiology Administrators (CCUPEKA), and to a small degree, the College of Kinesiology of Ontario.

  • Rationale for the modification*

The majority of Kinesiology students enter the program with the goal of becoming a registered health practitioner following completion of their Bachelor of Kinesiology. Physiotherapy and Chiropractic have the largest number of interested students. Unfortunately, these post-graduate programs are highly competitive and not all students are able to gain admission, despite exemplary grades and experience.
While some students choose to become Registered Kinesiologists, others want a more “hands on” profession. Massage Therapy offers an excellent alternative for these students. It is “hands on” similar to chiropractic and physiotherapy and also applies much of the knowledge gained in the Kinesiology degree to an area of applied study. Normally the Durham College Massage Therapy Diploma takes
three years to complete. Even though Kinesiology students are given recognition for past courses, there are four practical first year courses and specific aspects of ethics and communication courses that students need as pre-requisites to enter year two of the Massage Therapy Diploma. In completing a program review and matching learning outcomes in the Kinesiology program against these specific
Durham College Massage Therapy courses, it was ascertained that with the addition of an additional elective that the learning outcomes for these first year courses could be achieved and students would then be eligible for direct entry to Year Two of the Durham College Massage Therapy Diploma.

How will this change or enhance the program and/or opportunities for students and graduates?
  • Fit with the mission, mandate, strategic plans of the University, and the broader array of program offerings.*

The program fits nicely into the integrated academic-research plan of the university. The creation of a dedicated pathway gives students greater opportunity to identify and complete courses most related to their future career and educational goals. The majority of the included electives also include experiential learning opportunities.

Description of how the proposed modifications fit into the broader array of program offerings, particularly those areas of teaching and research strengths, and complementary areas of study.
  • Resource requirements
  • Faculty members*

No additional faculty members are required. The new course would need to be taught by an individual who is a registered massage therapist, and would thus be a sessional hire. All of the other courses already exist and are routinely offered.

List of core faculty associated with the program, including appointment status, home unit, areas of teaching and research interests, and any new faculty requirements and gaps they would be expected to fill.
  • Additional academic and non-academic human resources*

TA support for the laboratory portion of the new elective course, KINE 4150.

Details of any administrative requirements, including support staff, adjunct and part-time faculty, supervision of experiential learning opportunities, and any other additional academic and non-academic human resources.
  • Physical resource requirements*

The current Kinesiology lab space can accommodate the laboratory for the new elective, KINE 4150. The program has several massage therapy tables used for existing Athletic Therapy courses that can be used for KINE 4150.

Details of any physical resource requirements, including library holdings, information technology support and student services, special equipment, and space requirements (classrooms, laboratory, graduate student work/study space, other).
  • Business plan
  • Statement of funding requirements*

No additional resources are required. Except for KINE 4150, the required courses already exist and are routinely offered.

A summary statement of the funding required to support the modification, including projected enrolments, start-up and continuing costs, if applicable.
  • Statement of resource/funding availability*

The sessional hire to teach KINE 4150 can be accommodated within the faculty sessional budget.

Statements attesting to the adequacy of resources to support the modification from Deans who may have faculty members involved in or are contributing resources, the Registrar or the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Chief Librarian and the Provost.
  • Transition and communication plan
  • Transition plan for both new and current students*

All current 3rd year students and future students will have the option to enroll in this pathway as of September 2025.

Semester (e.g., Fall 2025) for the implementation of the proposed changes; include a plan for all current students in the program, by year level. If this change impacts students that are not new and/or 1st year students as of the start date, then a transition plan is required. Please remember to consider off-map students.
  • Communication plan for both new and current students*

The Faculty of Health Sciences will inform the current third year Kinesiology students about this opportunity and include it on their website and make their academic advisors aware.

Please explain how the current students will be made aware of this change (e.g., Who will be responsible for notifying students? How? Is Academic Advising aware?). Please remember to consider off-map students.
  • Converting to online options
  • Does this proposal contain any intended conversion of program components to online options? If yes, please complete the remaining items below*

(D) Impact and consultation
  • STEP 5 - Complete Section D
  • Consultation is central to governance at Ontario Tech. Faculties are required to consult with all areas impacted by this change, and the home faculty dean is responsible for all consultation decisions in this section of the form. Note that any false statements related to consultation may require re-submission of proposals.

  • Faculty Consultation
  • Will this change impact any other faculties? Some examples may include, but are not limited to, the scenarios listed below.*
  • Examples:

    • A course from another faculty is being added or removed from the program map.
    • Changes to joint and/or service programs (e.g., 'and Management' programs, targeted minors).
    • Changes to year of offering for courses from another faculty (e.g., moving a course from Year 1 to Year 2).

Additional examples can be found in the Resources section of the CIQE website.

  • If you answered yes to the question above, please explain and outline the consultation process in detail. Attach relevant documents (emails, Faculty Council minutes, etc.) or include links to corresponding documents.*

We have consulted with current and past kinesiology students, Durham College Health Science Associate Dean and Head of Massage Therapy, and Durham College Pathways “coordinator”. This course was developed in consultation with the Durham college massage therapy coordinator after a comprehensive review of the Ontario Tech Kinesiology program relative to massage specific core courses in the first year of the Durham college massage therapy program (CSAT 1500, CSAT 2500, MAST 1500, MAST 2500 and REIS 1501and ETHC 1502). The majority of learning outcomes were covered in the core kinesiology curriculum and two electives KINE 4413 Exercise Rehabilitation and Management and Kine 3476 Advanced Sport Injury Management. KINE 4150U “Foundational Skills and Techniques for Massage Therapy” was developed to address gaps in learning outcomes from key first year Durham college courses.

  • Student Consultation
  • How have current or prospective students been consulted about this change? (e.g., informal conversations, attendance at meetings, survey, indirectly through academic advising). Please provide details below.*

Faculty of Health Sciences has consulted current students and the Kinesiology Student Association who expressed strong support.

  • Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
  • What considerations have been made for equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization?*

Students in this pathway must complete all Kinesiology core courses prior to the new Foundations of Massage therapy course. Ontario Tech has KINE 2010 Health and Indigenous People in Canada as a core course within the Kinesiology program which is a pre-requisite for the Foundations of Massage course. Several other core courses in the existing a program have EDI and decolonization principles embedded. The purpose of the new foundations course is to provide adequate foundation in the “hands on” background needed for direct entry to year two of the Durham College massage therapy program. This is an important access point for marginalized groups as it recognizes prior learning and provides affordable entry to a registered health profession.
All students must be capable of performing the physical requirements of massage therapy. Students who need other accommodations will be accommodated through AODA requirements such as closed-captioning of posted lecture material, in addition to any individual accommodations recommended by student accessibility services (e.g. extra time for tests and assignments, etc.)

  • For more information and guidance on incorporating equity, diversity and inclusion principles in curricula, please visit the Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging resource section of the CIQE website.

  • Indigenous Content and Consultation
  • Does this change include any Indigenous content?*
