    Pathway for BA (Honours) Legal Studies students to complete a graduate status LLB at Teesside University, Middlesbrough, UK. 

    • Upon completion of the third year (90 credit hours) of the BA (Honours) Legal Studies, satisfying the course and GPA requirements for this pathway, students will be admitted into the two-year graduate status LLB at the partner university. After completing the first year course requirements for the accelerated LLB (30 credit hours in transfer credit), they will graduate with a BA (Honours) Legal Studies from Ontario Tech. Then, upon successful completion of their second, and final, year of the LLB, students will graduate with an LLB from that institution.

    The goal of the Legal Studies program is for students to develop an integrative understanding of the law, and its dynamic relationship to social, political, and technological change. While gaining knowledge of the legal system, students are also developing practices of critical inquiry, dialogue, persuasion and self-reflection— key elements of active, socially responsible citizenship. Practicum placements and internships enable students to acquire hands-on learning experiences in legal professional settings. The BA (Honours) Legal Studies/ LLB Pathway with Teesside University aims to equip students with a comparative, bi-jurisdictional legal education, thoroughly covering the Canadian legal context, while providing access to UK legal education. Students build on their academic skills and competencies and continue to deepen their professional, ethical, intellectual and personal development, while expanding their subject-specific knowledge and understanding of law in the United Kingdom. At Teesside students will have the opportunity to obtain further real-world experience providing pro bono legal advice through their Law Clinic, which works in partnership with lawyers, charities and voluntary organizations to empower members of the local community to access justice. Upon completion of this five-year pathway, graduates attain a BA (Honours) in Legal Studies from Ontario Tech University and an LLB from Teesside University. Graduates will have the option of pursuing professional legal qualifications in Canada or in the UK. Interested students should check with the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada for what additional requirements to expect if they want to return to Canada to practice law.

  • Admission requirements*

    Admission is competitive. The specific average or standing required for admission varies from year to year. Students are selected by taking into consideration a wide range of criteria including school marks, distribution of subjects taken, and performance in subjects relevant to the academic program. Possession of the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Preference will be given to applicants with the best qualifications.

    Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M credits including English (ENG4U) and attain a minimum average of 80%. Minimum 3.0 GPA (B average on a 4.3 scale) is required to maintain standing in the program.

    All other applicants should refer to admissions for the requirements for their specific category of admission.

  • Brief background on existing program*

    The Legal Studies program accepted its first students in Fall 2008, and graduated its first class in June 2012. When the program began, one tenure track faculty member was associated with it (Dr. Sasha Baglay). Tenure track faculty members were hired nearly annually thereafter: Dr. Andrea Slane in 2009; Drs. Rachel Ariss and Natalie Oman in 2010; Dr. Thomas McMorrow in 2011; and our last tenure track hire was Dr. Jen Rinaldi in 2014. A teaching stream faculty member, Dr. Bruce Curran was employed in the program from July 2014 until August 2016, and has not been replaced. Dr. Dennis Molinaro is at present employed on a one-year teaching contract. The overall program structure has not changed since its inception. However, the program maps have been significantly modified, as have nearly all of the course descriptions and some of the course titles. These adjustments were necessary in order to align the program requirements and course offerings with the program focus: that being critical exploration of the social roles of law. The Faculty has a history of developing programs that include Legal Studies courses and involve Legal Studies faculty members.  LGLS faculty member Dr. Slane led the development of the Faculty’s new inter-disciplinary Master of Arts in Social Practice and Innovation (MSPI), which began Fall 2023. At the intersections of legal studies, communication and digital media, and political science, the program aims to equip graduate students with the skills and knowledge to address complex contemporary, social challenges of our contemporary social world. The MSPI program culminates in a Major Research Project (MRP) aimed at public and community engagement. 

     

  • Rationale for the new component*

    The international experience Legal Studies students will gain from this pathway will enhance their capacity to contribute as global citizens, as well as deepen their fulfillment of the Legal Studies program learning outcomes, through their development of a comparative legal perspective. It also creates an option for students who wish to pursue law careers in the UK and Canada (subject the attainment of the necessary qualifications). Teesside University’s origins as a polytechnic that continues to serve students in industrial England parallels Ontario Tech’s own history in Oshawa and the Durham Region. An international partnership between the universities, coupled with the establishment of the accelerated LLB at Teesside, set the stage for developing this innovative pathway. The most comparable program is that offered by Trent, in partnership with University of Swansea. It is a seven year, as opposed to five-year program.

    According to the university’s originating statute, “It is the special mission of the university to provide career-oriented university programs and to design and offer programs with a view to creating opportunities for college graduates to complete a university degree.” Establishment of the Legal BA (Honours)/ Teesside LLB (accelerated) pathway is an opportunity for students who wish to pursue legal careers in the UK and Canada (subject to further qualification requirements). Building this pathway with Teesside University in the UK internationalizes our students’ learning and is therefore consistent with the university’s priorities to re-imagine learning and build partnerships.

    This pathway for Legal Studies students will be in place for Fall 2025. Students enrolled in any year of their Legal Studies degree will be eligible to apply to transfer into the pathway, so long as they have satisfied the admission requirements of a 3.0 GPA. They will be required to complete the course requirements for the accelerated Legal Studies BA (Honours) to have corresponding year standing in the pathway. 4th year students expecting to graduate with a BA Legal Studies are eligible to apply to Teesside’s accelerated LLB.

    Continued consultation is underway for the most significant program modification, the Teesside LLB pathway program. Meetings were held at Charles Hall the week of November 4th with the Teesside Associate Dean (International) and Head of Department of Law with all permanent Legal Studies faculty. 4th year students in Law and Social Change also met with Teesside guests to learn about their university and LLB program; afterwards the students had an opportunity to discuss and give feedback to the UPD of Legal Studies about the prospect of establishing the pathway program.

  • What considerations have been made for equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization?*

    Principles of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, or Decolonization must be considered in relation to every program change. As far as these four program modifications go, it is only the first that merits special attention in this regard. In this case, there is no change to the substantive content in the program. It involves condensing the four-year BA (Honours) to three years, with the signal difference being a reduction in the number of electives. We are proposing this pathway both because of the value an accelerated UK-based LLB may have for some prospective Legal Studies students and the pedagogical value we identify with studying abroad, in Middlesbrough at Teesside University, especially given its experiential learning opportunities. At the same time, an LLB attained in the UK does not qualify a graduate to write the bar and article in Ontario. Graduates must apply to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada National Committee on Accreditation and, at minimum, complete equivalency exams in a range of substantive Canadian law courses. Success on these exams will depend on student capacity for independent study. Moreover, because students will be paying international student fees for each of their two years in the UK, the costs incurred by the student will be substantial. Therefore, we have established pathway admission (and continuation) requirements so that students with low prospects of succeeding in the program (and afterwards on the NCA exams) will not invest time and money only to fail.
