Apply professional practice according to established protocols, safety guidelines, and existing legislation
Follow established protocols as defined in the policy, process, and procedure manuals
Verify that the relevant data on specimen and requisition is provided for test request, ensuring that appropriate specimens are tested according to established protocols.
Recognize relationships between analyses, diagnoses, clinical information, and treatment by assessing transfusion test results based on specimen integrity, reference values, critical values, method limitations, clinical conditions, and other laboratory findings.
Examine the associated quality management frameworks that govern modern Canadian transfusion medicine production and healthcare facilities
Perform common transfusion medicine immunological techniques for the detection and identification of clinically significant and insignificant red cell antigens and antibodies according to established protocols and existing standards from the Canadian Society for Transfusion Medicine (CSTM) and the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH).
Perform common compatibility techniques to provide blood and blood products to simulated patients including all aspects of appropriate donor selection (per unit type availability and phenotype), phenotyping, initiation of follow testing, and incompatibility resolution.
Assess blood and blood products to ensure quality and proper storage.
Perform routine transfusion investigations associated with the adverse effects of transfusion according to established protocols of the Canadian Society for Transfusion Medicine
Perform routine techniques associated with the investigation of Hemolytic Disease of the Fetal Newborn (HDNB) including those associated with the detection of material antibodies and determination of the degree of fetal-maternal hemorrhage (e.g., KB or Rosette).
Apply the principles of immunohematology to perform routine compatibility testing on the available TM instrumentation within the OnTechU transfusion laboratory, including aspects of quality control, key instrument maintenance and reagent preparation
Apply effective communication and teamwork skills through completion of laboratory activities that require collaboration and cooperation
Demonstrate professionalism through compliance with the expectation to produce individual results, taking responsibility for actions, recognizing limitations, and being accountable for professional actions including scope of practice, accountability and professional development.
Apply critical thinking skills to identify, evaluate, and problem solve sources of errors and initiate corrective action in all transfusion tests.
Recognizes pre-examination errors including elements of initial identification, documentation, and initiation of corrective action.
Perform routine blood product preparation and issuing procedures for simulated patients with various clinical conditions and or treatment specific situations.
Explain the most commonly encountered adverse effects of blood product transfusion including clinical presentation, expected laboratory findings, and patient prognosis.
Organize work within the transfusion medicine laboratory to accommodate priorities, perform simulated STAT workups and make efficient use of resources to ensure timely delivery of blood product as required.
