Following additional feedback solicited from students and staff, the change to the maintenance cGPA for Concurrent Education students will benefit all students, but especially those with intensive academic demands, where the rigorous workload may create additional challenges in maintaining a higher cGPA. This adjustment ensures that high quality prospects are being retained in the Concurrent Education program, while fostering equity and inclusivity by respecting students’ diverse backgrounds.
None
As Concurrent Students’ cGPA is only reviewed beginning after their second year, this will have no immediate impact on enrolment.
This change is to take effect in Fall 2025, and will affect applicants to the Fall 2026 intake.
Students who enrolled in Fall 2024 that may have a higher cGPA indicated on their offer letter (3.5, coincident with the program change submitted last year, or 3.7 as may have been communicated by the Admissions department) will be given consideration for attaining the new cGPA of 3.3.
Students applying for the Fall 2026 intake will be notified of the updated maintenance cGPA in their Concurrent Education offer letters.
Current students will be notified of the modified GPA requirements via email to their @ontariotechu.net address

Consultation is central to governance at Ontario Tech. Faculties are required to consult with all areas impacted by this change, and the home faculty dean is responsible for all consultation decisions in this section of the form. Note that any false statements related to consultation may require re-submission of proposals.

The change to the Concurrent Education cGPA will have a positive impact on belonging, inclusion, and psychological safety by reducing the fear and anxiety associated with minor reductions in cGPA. Moreover, the reduced cGPA in our promotional materials will broaden the range of students who can see themselves in our Concurrent program.
This change will also make the Concurrent Education pathway more accessible and inclusive, recognizing that students have various circumstances that can affect their academic performance (and therefore, their cGPA) while still maintaining rigour and an appropriate standard for the teaching profession.
The creation of a new elective course on Indigenous Knowledge, Environmental, and Sustainability Education (based on materials previously reviewed by the IEAC) upholds our faculty’s commitment to decolonization in education and will enable teacher candidates to more effectively explore decolonization in their own teaching practice.
For more information and guidance on incorporating equity, diversity and inclusion principles in curricula, please visit the Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging resource section of the CIQE website.
For more information on how Indigenous content is defined at Ontario Tech University and how to consult with the Indigenous Education Advisory Circle, please refer to the Protocol for Consultation with the Indigenous Education Advisory Circle.
This course was previously run as a Special Topics course and the IEAC was contacted at that time before it ran in Fall 2024.
Over several meetings with the Admissions department, we learned that the cGPA proposed in last year’s change (3.5) was not effective for their evaluation of Concurrent Education students as it does not align cleanly with Ontario Tech University’s grading system. We explored moving to the next grade band (GPA 3.7), but through consultations with Academic Advising and students currently in the Concurrent Education program, it was determined that this may create undue pressure and eliminate the benefit of applying for Concurrent Education (versus applying to the BEd through the consecutive pathway).
As a result, we decided that 3.3 would be an appropriate maintenance cGPA for Concurrent Education students.
Important note: it is imperative that you choose the correct routing path as it cannot be changed once a proposal has been launched. If you have made a routing error after launching the proposal, the proposal will be cancelled and a new proposal will be required. If you require assistance with routing, please contact ciqe@ontariotechu.ca.
Please note that changes to joint or collaborative programs do require approval at Faculty Council of each faculty involved in the program. You do not need to include other faculties in the routing, however, consultation with other faculties should be noted and any required approval by other Faculty Councils (and date of approval) should be noted in the comments section as approval is logged on the home Faculty Council step.
