Choose your faculty from the list of available options.
  • Content type*
Choose ‘program’, unless you are certain the content you are creating should be a shared core. Contact ciqe@ontariotechu.ca if you require assistance.
  • Major Program Modification type*
  • Summary of proposed changes*

The proposed changes are intended to create a fully online option through the Criminology and Justice Advanced Entry pathway.

The Criminology and Justice program already provides a substantial number of online courses and this new stream seeks to take advantage of those offerings by simply formalizing a stream that ensures that students can meet the degree requirements. The changes below establish a modified course map. The modified map retains the core structure of the existing program but makes a few adjustments to the option blocks as some course options (e.g. Practicum) will not be available through this online stream.

This proposed change will also be used to create a major or cohort code that will be used to prioritize students enrolled in this stream in online or hybrid criminology courses. Students in our typical stream will still be able to access those online courses when space is available.

We see this stream as a recruitment strategy as this degree will be appealing to non-local students and students whose life circumstance make in-person attendance a significant barrier to pursuing a UG degree.

Provide a brief point by point summary of the changes included in this proposal.
  • Is there a change to total credit hours in the program?*
  • Is a new course associated with this proposal?*
Select 'yes' only if you are adding a brand new course to the calendar copy in this proposal.

(B) Program component information and calendar copy
  • STEP 3 - Complete Section B
  • Title of new program component*
Criminology and Justice - Advanced Entry - Online Option
Criminology and Justice - Advanced Entry - Online Option
This will be the title of the program or shared core in the calendar.
  • Program type*
Select the corresponding program type from the list of options. If you feel an option is missing, please contact ciqe@ontariotechu.ca.
  • Degree type*
Select the corresponding degree type from the list of options. If you feel an option is missing, please contact ciqe@ontariotechu.ca.
  • Description of new program component*

The Criminology and Justice Advanced Entry program provides college graduates with the opportunity to apply their Police Foundations, Correctional Worker/Community and Justice Services, Child and Youth Worker, Law and Security Administration diploma, or
Youth Corrections and Intervention graduate certificate toward a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminology and Justice.
Students enrolled in the Criminology and Justice Advanced Entry program will enter directly into third year of the Criminology and Justice degree program at the university and will follow a modified program map that will allow students to complete the programin two years of full-time study.

The description of the new program component will be included in the Academic Calendar.
  • Admission requirements*

Admission is competitive. The specific average or standing required for admission varies from year to year. Students are selected by taking into consideration a wide range of criteria including school marks, distribution of subjects taken, and performance in subjects relevant to the academic program. Possession of the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Preference will be given to applicants with the best qualifications.

For further information, please visit college-university transfer programs.

An outline of the requirements for admission to the new program component, including additional requirements or procedures, and recognition of prior learning experience.
  • Program map*
Use this section to build a program map for the academic calendar that shows courses and/or research components offered each academic year.
  • Program structure*

The program structure is nearly identical to the normal Criminology and Justice Advanced Entry map. Students in this stream will not have access to Practicum, but will have access to other experiential learning opportunities such as Internship and CRMN 4100U - Doing Criminology. The Criminology and Justice program already provides a substantial number of online courses and this new stream seeks to take advantage of those offerings by simply formalizing a stream that ensures that students can meet all the degree requirements.

Describe any experiential or other applied learning opportunities that are part of the new program component.
  • Program learning outcomes*

We are in the midst of a program review and so the PLOs are being updated. This online stream firmly fits within both the new and updated version of PLOs.

(C) Detailed proposal information
  • STEP 4 - Complete Section C
  • Introduction
  • Brief background on existing program*

The Criminology and Justice program is well established and a popular program within FSSH and this online stream aims to increase the reach of the program.

  • Rationale for the new component*

This modification will allow the degree to be taken by students outside the local area or whose circumstances or life commitments make in-person classes a barrier to pursing a degree.

How will this change enhance the program and/or opportunities for students and graduates?
  • Fit with the mission, mandate, strategic plans of the University and broader array of program offerings*

This proposal fits with the Mission of the university to “equip future leaders to solve complex problems.” This is the same high quality degree, but in a package that makes it an option for students beyond the local area and who’s circumstances preclude in-person classes. This online stream fits particularly well with the pillar of “Learning re-imagined as it provides students with a stream that can be accessed from anywhere and by a segment of learners who are unable to access
typical, in-person streams. In this way, this new offering is very much a “learner-centred educational option”.

We believe that these changes will assist in meeting the University’s Strategic Mandate Agreement in the area of Skills and Job Outcomes. We believe that these changes will allow a new set of students to pursue their educational goals and will help retain students who move from the local area or whose circumstances make in-person learning difficult to pursue.

By expanding the reach of the program this change also aligns well with the university’s Differentiated Growth Strategy.

Description of how the proposed modifications fit into the broader array of program offerings, particularly those areas of teaching and research strengths, and complementary areas of study.
  • Resource requirements
  • Faculty members*

There is no change to the faculty members.

List of core faculty associated with the program, including appointment status, home unit, areas of teaching and research interests, and any new faculty requirements and gaps they would be expected to fill.
  • Additional academic and non-academic human resources*

There are no additional academic or non-academic human resources required.

Details of any administrative requirements, including support staff, adjunct and part-time faculty, supervision of experiential learning opportunities, and any other additional academic and non-academic human resources.
  • Physical resource requirements*

There are no additional physical resource requirements.

Details of any physical resource requirements, including library holdings, information technology support and student services, special equipment, and space requirements (classrooms, laboratory, graduate student work/study space, other).
  • Business plan
  • Statement of funding requirements*

There are no additional funding requirements.

A summary statement of the funding required to support the modification, including projected enrolments, start-up and continuing costs, if applicable.
  • Statement of resource/funding availability*

There are no additional resource or funding requirements.

Statements attesting to the adequacy of resources to support the modification from Deans who may have faculty members involved in or are contributing resources, the Registrar or the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Chief Librarian and the Provost.
  • Transition and communication plan
  • Transition plan for both new and current students*

We aim to have this stream in place for September 2026 for incoming students. Although not formally available to existing students, a large number of online course options will still be available for students in our typical stream.

Semester (e.g., Fall 2025) for the implementation of the proposed changes; include a plan for all current students in the program, by year level. If this change impacts students that are not new and/or 1st year students as of the start date, then a transition plan is required. Please remember to consider off-map students.
  • Communication plan for both new and current students*

Students will be communicated via our website, academic advising and at other university events such as open house. The new online stream will be made available on the OUAC website.

Please explain how the current students will be made aware of this change (e.g., Who will be responsible for notifying students? How? Is Academic Advising aware?). Please remember to consider off-map students.
  • Converting to online options
  • Does this proposal contain any intended conversion of progam components to online options? If yes, please complete the remaining items below.*
  • Adequacy of technological platform

The university already has the technological resources to offer online delivery through platforms such as Canvas, Google Meet, Respondus, Perusell, and Kaltura.

Describe the adequacy of the technological platform to be used for online delivery.
  • Maintenance of and/or changes to the quality of education

As noted, the criminology and justice program already offers a number of high quality online and hybrid courses and we have no concerns about being able to provide high quality education for students. Students will still have plenty of opportunities for interaction with faculty members and
peers in the online environment and any new course offerings will align with the Program Learning Outcomes of the program.

Describe how the quality of education will be maintained and/or changes when moving to online delivery.
  • Maintenance of and/or changes to program objectives

    Program objectives remain the same.

Describe how the current program objectives will be maintained and/or changed when moving to online delivery.
  • Maintenance of and/or changes to program-level learning outcomes

The Program Learning Outcomes remain the same.

Describe how the current program-level outcomes will be maintained an/or changed when moving to online delivery.
  • Sufficiency of support services and training for teaching staff

The faculty and staff already have the necessary skills and training to provide online course delivery.

Describe the support services and training for teaching staff that will be made available when moving to online delivery.
  • Sufficiency and type of support for students in the new learning environment

Ontario Tech already embraces online and hybrid learning across a number of its programs including the Frazer Faculty of Education. For this reason many of Ontario Tech’s services and supports are already available online including the Accessibility Office, the Student
Learning Centre, and Student Mental Health Services. Further, there is nothing in this stream that prevent students from accessing in-person supports if required or preferred.

Describe the sufficiency and type of supports that will be available to students when moving to online delivery.
  • Other
  • Additional supporting information, if applicable

The criminology program already offers a number of online options and so the creation of this stream should not necessitate the substantial conversion of courses to an online format. We also intend to ensure our in-person offerings are not substantially impacted by this stream. The main consideration for this stream will be on annual scheduling to ensure we are offering a sufficient mix of courses to satisfy the requirements of this stream – this will be done in line withour current planning processes in consultation with the faculty members in the program, Budget Officer, and Dean.

Describe any additional information needed to support the proposal.
