We are adding two new courses to electives in the program: POSC 2800U Business, Economy, and Society and POSC 3304U Planetary Health and Global Environmental Justice. This is primarily to add choice to students across Faculties and FSSH programs (especially POSC and Sustainability Studies).
POSC 2800U is aimed at bolstering the Business and Society presence in Political Science with aims at eventually generating a minor and/or major in addition to the existing concentration. It also creates a service course that could attract FBIT students. The goal is to eventually build an alternative to standard business and economics programs, from within FSSH.
POSC 3304U is focused on a partnership with “Common Earth” NGO in hopes of building a relationship for future cooperation based on community-university ties.
Adjustments to the requirements for the Business and Society specialization include the addition of COMM 2311U and POSC 2800U to the list of required course options, reducing the number of required courses and adding two general electives.

POSC 2800U Business, Economy, and Society allows FSSH and Political Science students who are interested in business and management to have a critical and heterodox introduction to economics course from an interdisciplinary social science perspective.
POSC 3304U Planetary Health and Global Environmental Justice allows Sustainability Studies minor students (and Sustainability Major students beginning 2024) to have a course taught in cooperation with an NGO over the summer term. Not only will this diversify educational opportunity for our students, but hopefully foster a relationship leading to the funding of university programming, research institutes, or other collaborative efforts.
Offering POSC 3304U may require an additional FSSH course to be offered in the spring/summer term (taught by the Dean). Hopefully this is an investment that brings external funding via partnership with Common Earth.
POSC 2800U does not imply further resources.
POSC 2800U may divert non-FSSH students from taking current large service courses (SOCI 1000U and PSYC 1000U)
These changes add courses, and do not take any away, so limited impact is expected. Students, beginning in Fall 2024, may choose to take these toward their degree or as an elective. Changes to the Business and Society specialization will apply to both new and continuing students. Continuing students will be advised of the change as soon as final approval is received.

These program changes were discussed with the Dean and the POSC program committee. Also with UCC which includes Academic Advising.
The courses added are specifically designed to introduce concepts of equity, sustainability, and inclusion.
